The left and the right should both be able to think this is a good story. A kid whose odds are stacked against him overcomes them to achieve something. Doesn't that parallel the American dream we all love of working hard to succeed and being rewarded for it?

Maybe it might not mean much if you also had to walk an hour and a half to catch the bus every single day of school. But I know in my neighborhood, over half the kids are driven by their parents to spare them the less than 5 minute walk to the bus stop. And if it's not 72 degrees out, the kids sit in the SUV so they don't have to deal with being outside in the elements. You wouldn't think there would be a need to bring up the obvious privilege those of us who didn't have to do that had/have over those kids who aren't as fortunate, but apparently our obvious privilege is hidden in plain sight for some.
